Taco Hunt

Mexitaco
This was the first stop on our hunt. Practically empty at noonish, which wasn't a good sign. Ordered Tacos Al Pastor and Nopales (Cactus). Arriving first are condiments - watery red and green salsa, onions, limes. Filling for Al Pastor was good, needs a bit more pineapple. Cactus was watery and tasteless. Corn tortilla's are oily, but decent. Service is friendly and efficient.

As a whole, this was not a good start to the hunt. Everything seemed to be too watery at Mexitaco. Return visit is unlikely.

El Trompo

Popular quick eats spot for those in Kensington. Ordered Tinga tacos and nachos. The trend at Toronto taqueria's seems to be watery salsa - 2 bowls sit at each table. Tinga tacos taste ok, but lack any heat (They're advertised as spicy). Nachos are of the Tex-Mex variety, again nothing spectacular. Tortilla's are better here than at Mexitaco.

The one dish we didn't order (but should have) ... the names escapes me, but it's the crispy cheese dish. One diner is seen ordering this dish and a beer... cheese and a cold one, can't think of anything better.

Approval:

Chimichanga
This place is in the mould of a Quesada Mexican Grill, serving mission style burritos and tacos. Ordered 3 tacos, one of each of the meats (beef, chicken, shrimp). Tortilla's are commercially made, lightly grilled to warm. Despite Tex-Mex toppings (what we were looking to avoid), these tacos are actually quite tasty. Good lime flavour, everything fresh... just a little on the cold side.
Haven't tried burritos, but could be an alternative to Burrito Boyz.

Approval:

Taco El Asador
In the heart of old Korea town. Very popular among locals, which makes finding a table at this place extremely difficult. Owners are not Mexican, but El Salvadorian. Ordered 1 soft beef, 1 crispy chicken and cheese pupusas. Crispy is the way to go for tacos, nice crunch. Do not miss the El Salvadorian staple pupusas (like a fluffier quesadilla), they're done very well at El Asador.
